To do this, a device called the PCI card DVR video recorder and capture board needs to be added to the computer. This device has 4 channels for camera input, MPEG4 video compression, auto detection, screen switching and a host of other features. Using large capacity hard disks, several days of video can be recorded on the computer.

Motion spy cams are available in black and white as well as color versions. Black and white cameras are cheaper and allow longer duration of digital video to be captured on a computer because the amount of information to be captured is less due to the absence of color.
